TIME COURSE OF LEXICAL ACCESS IN WRITING 1 Running head: TIME COURSE OF LEXICAL ACCESS IN WRITING Tracking the Time Course of Lexical Access in Orthographic Production: An Event-Related Potential Study of Word Frequency Effects in Written Picture Naming
نویسندگان
چکیده
Previous studies of spoken picture naming using event-related potentials (ERPs) have shown that speakers initiate lexical access within 200 ms after stimulus onset. In the present study, we investigated the time course of lexical access in written, rather than spoken, word production. Chinese participants wrote target object names which varied in word frequency, and written naming times and ERPs were measured. Writing latencies exhibited a classical frequency effect (faster responses for highthan for low-frequency names). More importantly, ERP results revealed that electrophysiological activity elicited by highand low frequency target names started to diverge as early as 168 ms post picture onset. We conclude that lexical access during written word production is initiated within 200 ms after picture onset. This estimate is compatible with previous studies on spoken production which likewise showed a rapid onset of lexical access (i.e., within 200 ms after stimuli onset). We suggest that written and spoken word production share the lexicalization stage.

متن کاملLexical Access in Persian Normal Speakers: Picture Naming, Verbal Fluency and Spontaneous Speech
Objectives: Lexical access is the process by which the basic conceptual, syntactical and morpho-phonological information of words are activated. Most studies of lexical access have focused on picture naming. There is hardly any previous research on other parameters of lexical access such as verbal fluency and analysis of connected speech in Persian normal participants. This study investigates t...
متن کاملLexical Access in Persian Speaking Children With and Without Specific Language Impairment
Introduction: Word retrieval problems are among the limitations observed in children with specific language impairment during the initial schooling years. These restrictions are predictive of reading problems and poor performance at school. Additionally, studies on lexical access in Persian speaking children are scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate and compare naming accuracy and ...
متن کاملEvent-related potentials and oscillatory brain responses associated with semantic and Stroop-like interference effects in overt naming.
Picture-word interference is a widely employed paradigm to investigate lexical access in word production: Speakers name pictures while trying to ignore superimposed distractor words. The distractor can be congruent to the picture (pictured cat, word cat), categorically related (pictured cat, word dog), or unrelated (pictured cat, word pen). Categorically related distractors slow down picture na...
متن کاملThe Time Course of Chinese Lexical Access in Speech Production: Picture-Word Interference Paradigm Study
The present experiment explores the time course of Chinese lexical access in speech production. The experiment applies classical picture-word interference paradigm. The picture paired with different interfering stimulus (SEMANTIC, PHONOLOGICAL, UNRELATED and NEUTRAL) in different SOA (stimulus onset asynchrony, SOA). The results show that SOA and interfering condition affect the picture naming ...
